I love the convenience of these Solid Moisturising Bars when I am travelling and don’t want to run the risk of my beautiful DIY butters and balms liquefying in the car. These bars are deeply moisturising for dry skin. They also make gorgeous gifts; you can make them weeks in advance, so there’s no excuse not to get busy in the kitchen and stock your gift cupboard.
The high ratio of beeswax means that the mixture sets quite quickly, so don’t leave this one in your bowl too long before filling your moulds. Also, note that you can sub the beeswax for candelilla wax (handy to know if you’re a vegan) – just halve the quantity.
Solid Moisturising Bars
Makes: 250 g Prep time: < 10 min (allow approx. 60 mins to set).
Ingredients
- 100 g shea butter
- 100 g carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil and sweet almond oil are popular choices)
- 50 g beeswax
- 40 drops of essential oils
My Choice of Essential Oils
My favourite essential oils in this recipe are lemongrass and geranium but don’t be limited by my suggestions. Use oils that fit your budget, or those that you already have in your collection. Read here for more information on essential oils.
Extra Equipment Required
Silicone moulds
Method
1. Add shea butter, carrier oil and beeswax to a glass bowl and heat until completely melted. (Double boiler method – place bowl on a pot of gently simmering water and stir frequently; Microwave method – heat in short bursts on low, stopping and stirring frequently). Remove from heat.
2. Add essential oils and mix until combined.
3. Pour mixture into moulds and place into the fridge or freezer to set (this will reduce the chance of graininess developing over time and may take 3-4 hours).
4. Unmould and store individually, or transfer into a jar or container (with lid) between sheets of baking paper.
To Use
Run bar over body and massage in. In cold weather, it helps to warm the bar between your hands prior to use. In excessively warm weather, it may be necessary to store your bars on a soap dish.

I’m so glad I discovered this solid moisturizing bar. It cleared up my pre-teens face after a mild rash/irritation in just a couple of days. I love how little you need to use and how soft it makes you skin feel.
I have made this as gifts and every one was so happy with them. So quick and easy too. Thank you Krissy ?
My all time favourite ? Leaves my skin so nice and soft ? Thank you!
Love these! Simple to make and make great gifts ? ❤️
These solid moisturising bars are awesome. It’s quite hot where we are and we live in a very hot house, but I’ve had no trouble with these melting when they weren’t supposed to. They feel amazing on the skin too.
Is 40 drops EO safe for my almost 3 yr old?
There is some good info here on dilution rates for children > https://blog.planttherapy.com/blog/2018/09/11/how-to-dilute-essential-oils-a-comprehensive-guide/
These bars are a bit of a game changer in my opinion. I LOOOOVE them! I use Lavender and Geranium EO’s in mine and they smell amazing. The subtle shine left on the skin gives a natural, healthy glow too. Plus I can skip perfume because I smell lovely all day after using these. ?
This recipe is my new favourite! It’s so easy to make and use. Thanks for all the great recipes!
This recipe is amazing! Thankyou so much Krissy for opening my eyes to DIY and giving us such gorgeous recipes to try.
Can you make this recipe in those twist up tubes (like lip balm but wider)?
Yep you can 🙂
I love this recipe! I have made so many and I use them on myself and my family plus give them as gifts. I add a tiny amount of lavender which makes them look so pretty. So easy to make and use. They’re definitely a favourite DIY of ours ❤️
