This is such a simple and fun activity to do with the kids – when mine were younger (around the time I was recipe-testing for my book Make & Play, they couldn’t get enough! It uses just three common ingredients, takes a few minutes to make, and will gift them (and you!) with hours of fun.
Watch as they build shapes and see them slowly melt before their eyes. Turn it into a challenge, a friendly race, or even a little science lesson.
This recipe was previously exclusive to my kids’ book Make & Play – a collection of 40 easy-to-follow natural DIY recipes written for kids and tested by kids, designed to encourage creativity, learning and hands-on fun. But I wanted to share this one with you too. If you’d like to check out Make & Play, you can find it here.
Enjoy the simplicity of this recipe, and leave a comment if you try it – let me know how you find it.
Melting Putty
Makes: 260 g Prep time: < 10 min. (for kids)
Ingredients
- 140 g arrowroot flour
- 100 g aloe vera gel (not the fresh garden variety)
- 20 g olive oil
- colourant (optional)

Method
1. Grab a mixing bowl and weigh in the arrowroot flour, aloe vera gel and olive oil.
2. Add the colouring (if you’re using it) and mix until the ingredients start coming together.
3. Then, transfer the mixture onto a clean work surface and knead for a minute or so. Your putty is ready when it can be made into a smooth ball, and then starts melting in your hands.
4. Pop your putty into a container.
To Use
Recipe Notes
If you find your putty ‘melts’ too quickly, just knead in a little extra flour.
